Summer is upon us, which is why it’s the perfect time for you and your family pet to spend some quality time outdoors together! A great way to do this is to plan a camping trip. Whether it be at a local campsite or at a new location, this is sure to be a memorable experience between you and your beloved pet.
While this can be a great vacation for you and your family pet, it’s also important to take some precautions. Our team at Bivvy has provided you with a few camping safety tips to ensure that you and your pet stay safe while having a blast on your camping trip!
Find a pet-friendly campsite
While it might be a surprise, not all campsites allow pets, so before packing your bags, it’s important to make sure the campsite you have chosen allows pets. We’ve listed below a few of the best pet-friendly campgrounds in the United States.
Bring extra food and water
Having enough food and water on-hand when visiting a campsite is crucial to making sure your pet stays a happy camper during your trip. Because there are a ton of fun summer activities to take part in, it’s likely that your pet is going to be exerting extra energy, so you’ll definitely want to make sure that you have enough food to keep them nourished. It’s also important to note that while some nearby bodies of water may have safe drinking water, it’s best to be safe than sorry and bring your own just to be sure.
Make sure your pet is in good health
Ensuring that your pet is in tip-top shape is a great idea before you hit the road for your camping trip. Making sure your pet leaves the vet with a clean bill of health before your trip can provide you with peace-of-mind knowing that there are no unknown issues going on. Taking a visit to the vet before leaving also allows you to make sure your pet has all their vaccines along with flea and tick prevention.
Bivvy Wellness Care can be added to your existing insurance policy in select states. Our Wellness Care can provide your pet with routine and preventative care to help make sure your pet is in great shape!
Check the Weather
Keeping an eye on the local weather forecast is important to ensure you have a great trip! Not only does this allow you to plan around any unwanted weather, such as rain, but it also allows you to prepare for how you’ll have to care for your pet. Depending on where you decide to camp, you may need to pay close attention to your doggo so they don’t overheat during the hot summer days or get too cold once the sun goes down.
Make sure you have proper collars and ID
At your campground, it’s likely that your pup will be partaking in a variety of activities, so it’s a great idea to have a variety of collars and leashes on hand with proper ID. Harnesses can be useful when swimming and hiking to control their movement, while a long leash and prong collar may be a better fit for training sessions. Proper ID tags are also necessary, as many campsites allow for off-leash fun! Check out Hepper to learn more about types of dog collars and their differences.
Invest in a good tie-out stake
Bringing a tie-out stake to your campground is a great idea. A dog tie-out is a spiral stake with a leash attached that twists in the ground and acts as an anchor so that your pet doesn’t run off. This can allow your pet to safely enjoy the campsite, while also keeping them in your sight.
Bring a dog first aid kit
Packing a pet-friendly first aid kit is a great idea when traveling for an outdoor trip. Many campsites are in a remote area and don’t have vet care readily available, so it’s best to be prepared. Here are some of the items to consider including in your pet’s first aid kit:
