Getting in Shape with Your Pup

Happy 2022, Bivvy fam! We hope the holidays were good to you and your fur babies. But as you emerge from them, and from the last couple of years of quarantine, are you and your pup feeling a little worse for wear? And we’ve got a little guide for where you plus the four-leggeds can exercise together in a few of the regions across the great U.S. of A.

The South

South Carolina

• Check out Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia—1,400 acres of hiking trails and campgrounds. Dogs are allowed in most outdoor areas on-leash. And there is a dog park made up of two fenced-in acres where you can exercise with your pup off-leash if you obtain a permit.
• Croft State Park is another good one. Near downtown Spartanburg, it’s made up of 7,000 dog-friendly acres, including 20 miles of hiking and biking trails.
• Sticking with the downtown Spartanburg area, Cottonwood Trail is a great place to head out to with your dog to crush your mutual fitness goals. It’s a 116-acre trail system that includes a boardwalk, wetlands, and running and hiking trails. And dogs are welcome on leash!
• If Charleston is more your scene, check out Magnolia Gardens, a leashed-dog-welcoming 3.5-mile loop near the city.

North Carolina

Austin has been called one of the top ten cities for dog-friendly urban hiking. And that’s just the beginning of what Texas has to offer the fitness-aficionado-and-dog duo. Check out Mary Moore Searight Metropolitan Park, an off-leash dog trail in Austin. Or Butler Hike and Bike Trail, a gravelly ten-mile loop around Ladybird Lake, where dogs are welcome on-leash.

Maryland

Brush up on some American history and get your steps in with your pup in the new year in Maryland, at the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park trails. • Rattlesnake Mountain in Farmington, a moderately difficult 2.5-mile route
• Crescent Lake Trail, an easy hike in Plainville
• Metacomet Trail in Avon
• The trails around the White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield
• Bear Mountain Reservation in Danbury, over on the west side of Connecticut near New York
• Babcock Preserve in Greenwich
• Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center in Mystic, in eastern Connecticut near Rhode Island
